Chapter Twelve

If everything worked out as planned, this would prove to be a birthday weekend Sam wouldn’t soon forget. Hopefully, in a good way. It was a miracle that everything had come together in the few days Jennifer had to pull it off. She hadn’t even known that Sam’s birthday was coming up until a card had been passed around the office for signatures.

For the past few months, Sam had gone out of her way to introduce Jennifer to the Midwest by way of so many amazing experiences and, in doing so, had created so many new memories that she’d cherish forever.

Her doorbell rang. Jennifer took a deep breath and opened it. Now was the moment of truth to see if she really knew Sam well enough to give her a fantastic birthday weekend full of new-to-her firsts. If nothing else, she wanted Sam to feel special because she certainly was special to Jennifer.

“Hey, you. Happy birthday.” Jennifer greeted her with a hug. She caught a whiff of that same sexy scent from her suit jacket. What she wouldn’t give to know what fragrance that was. “Did you get new jeans? Wow, they fit nice, very nice. You look great.” Sam was wearing a cream, short-sleeved, collared button-down tucked into a pair of dark blue Levi’s that showed off how tall and fit she was. Completing the outfit was a sharp-looking pair of western boots that Jennifer remembered admiring when she’d helped Sam switch bedrooms. To top it off, her leather belt matched the boots perfectly.

She looked hot. Jennifer was still confused by her attraction and found it more and more difficult to resist urges she’d never felt for another woman.

“Thank you.” Sam pulled her out of her thoughts. “As always, you look absolutely amazing. I like your hair in a French braid. It’s the first time I’ve seen it back like that, outside of your messy ponytails when you sleep over.”

Jennifer enjoyed the compliments. She’d found herself taking extra time planning her own outfits to see Sam’s response. Today’s choice of a light cotton sundress with thin shoulder straps and modest matching pumps was every bit the simple winner she’d hoped it would be. “Thank you. Where’s your stuff?”

“Everything I need fits in here.” Sam turned to the side and showed off a black backpack slung over her shoulder.

“My, how differently we travel, my friend. Are you ready to go?”

“Sure, where’re your bags? I’ll help carry them down.”

Ever since enchiladas night, Jennifer always came to Sam’s house with all of the essentials; that meant two carry-ons, covering any need, always in the car. “They’re already loaded.” She picked up her purse, locked the front door, and tucked her arm into Sam’s at the elbow. It was a simple touch that she looked forward to during the off-hours more and more.

“Do I get a hint as to where we’re going?” Sam asked.

“Patience, dear friend. One birthday surprise at a time.” When they got to the bottom of the steps, Jennifer pulled them to a stop.
